PTA Blames Telecom Infrastructure for Slow Internet After VPN Use

Following the use of virtual private networks (VPNs), the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has now attributed the slow internet speeds across Pakistan to the telecom infrastructure. PTA states that the web management system, which has been in operation for 18 years, is designed to control grey traffic and does not contribute to the reduction of internet speed.

PTA reports that 42% of telecom sites across Pakistan operate without generators, leaving over 21,000 sites vulnerable to power outages, which has significantly impacted internet and telecom services during load-shedding. While generators are installed at 24,885 sites, many lack adequate power backup.

The document also highlighted security concerns, revealing that over 739 telecom sites have been targeted by thieves in recent years, resulting in the theft of generators and other critical equipment. Additionally, 147 sites were attacked by terrorists over the last five years, damaging telecom infrastructure and affecting internet services.

Regarding international connectivity, PTA noted that faults in submarine cables have been addressed in the past. It also mentioned an upcoming project by Transworld, which is laying a 45,000 KM cable connecting Pakistan with 33 African and Middle Eastern countries. This cable, with an 18-terabyte-per-second capacity, is expected to significantly boost bandwidth and improve internet speeds.
