Apple Introduces Quantum Dot Screens to MacBooks for the First Time

Apple’s newest MacBook Pros, launched last month with M4 chips, come with a quietly introduced display upgrade. Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants revealed that the latest MacBook Pros feature a quantum dot (QD) film instead of the red KSF phosphor film used previously. The cadmium-free QD film enhances color gamut and motion performance.

Apple previously avoided using QD films due to their cadmium content. Now, with cadmium-free options offering better efficiency and performance, the company has adopted the technology.

The new MacBook Pros continue to feature LCD screens but include a QD film enhancement, offering improved performance, though still falling short of QD-OLED displays. This upgrade is available across all models, including those with and without nano-texture glass.

The MacBook Pros remain available in 14″ and 16″ sizes, with three chip options: the base M4, the M4 Pro (first introduced in the Mac mini), and the high-performance M4 Max, Apple’s current flagship chip.

Here’s the important features of the new 14″ MacBook Pro:
