Work From Home Announced for Smog-Hit Areas Until End of 2024

To combat worsening air quality, the Punjab government has ordered that 50% of employees in provincial offices work remotely. This directive, issued by Punjab’s Director General of Environment, applies to all government, semi-government, and autonomous bodies. The measure also includes conducting inter-departmental meetings online and encouraging carpooling for employees commuting to reduce emissions contributing to smog.

In response to rising smog levels, the Punjab government has mandated a 50% remote work model for both public and private sector employees in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, and Multan from November 13 to December 31. This measure aims to reduce emissions and the health risks posed by poor air quality. The Environment Department has emphasized reducing road traffic and pollutant levels, noting that vehicle emissions are a major contributor to the worsening smog.

Due to hazardous air quality, the Punjab government has ordered the closure of schools and colleges in five divisions—Sargodha, Rawalpindi, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal—from November 13 to 17. This decision aims to protect students from the health risks associated with the smog.
