Weather Office Announces Regional Monsoon Outlook Across Pakistan

PMD Warns of Above-Normal Rainfall and Potential Extreme Weather During Monsoon

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has released its seasonal forecast for the upcoming monsoon, predicting above-normal rainfall in several regions. The outlook also warns of potential extreme weather events, including flash floods and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

The forecast, based on analysis from eight global seasonal prediction models, suggests that central and southern areas of the country—including Punjab and Kashmir—are expected to experience normal to slightly above-normal rainfall during the July to September (JAS) period.

PMD Forecasts Varied Rainfall and Rising Temperatures for Monsoon Season

In contrast to central and southern regions, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) anticipates normal to slightly below-normal rainfall in northern areas such as Gilgit-Baltistan and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the July–September (JAS) monsoon period.

Additionally, the PMD predicts above-normal temperatures across the country, with the most significant increases expected in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

These elevated temperatures are likely to accelerate snowmelt in upper northern regions, potentially raising river water levels and putting extra pressure on already vulnerable catchment areas, heightening the risk of flooding and other climate-related impacts.
