The federal government intends to eliminate solar net metering and replace it with a gross metering system to discourage solar energy use and compel consumers to revert to the extremely expensive grid electricity. The Ministry of Energy has informed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that net metering is reducing the revenues of distribution companies (DISCOs). With the gross metering system, consumers will need to sell all electricity produced by their rooftop solar panels to the grid and then buy back what they require, as reported by the Express Tribune. This strategy to implement gross metering in the next fiscal year is in response to the increasing number of households switching to solar energy to escape the high costs of grid electricity, which, including additional charges, costs about Rs. 62 per unit.
