As Punjab prepares to transition all schools and colleges to solar energy, officials have requested updated information on institutions already converted. Out of 861 operational higher and secondary schools across the province—including 21 in Lahore—only four have so far been shifted to solar power, according to sources.
The Education Department has issued a formal directive instructing school administrators to submit detailed data on schools scheduled for solar conversion. The deadline for submitting this information is June 30, 2025.
It revealed that out of 861 operational higher and secondary schools across the province — including 21 in Lahore — only four have officially been shifted to solar power. However, some institutions have independently adopted solar energy solutions without government assistance.
A notification issued by the Education Department has called on school principals to promptly submit detailed data regarding their solar status. The notice warns that failure to comply may result in disciplinary action against the responsible heads.
Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) General Secretary Rana Liaquat Ali commented that the initiative to solarize schools has been in motion for the past five years. However, due to limited government funding, many institutions have been forced to rely on self-financing to install solar systems.
The province-wide solar transition is part of Punjab’s broader effort to promote renewable energy, reduce dependence on the national grid, and ensure uninterrupted power for educational activities.
