Nepra has once again approved a surge in electricity prices, adding an additional Rs 5.62 per unit, imposing a financial burden on the public.
The request to raise the electricity price by Rs 5.62 per unit was discussed and approved during a hearing at the Nepra head office, with Chairman Waseem Mukhtar presiding over the session. The recent price hike will impose an extra cost of Rs 49 billion on electricity consumers. The National Electric Regulatory Authority has stated that a comprehensive decision will be released later, following a thorough review of the relevant data.
In the course of the application hearing, CPPA officials mentioned that the increase in the FCA (Fuel Cost Adjustment) amount encompasses not only the elevated FCA but also includes arrears. This comprises the indexation of mattresses totaling more than Rs 2.56 billion. It was highlighted that there is stability in the prices of RLNG (Re-Gasified Liquefied Natural Gas), imported coal, and local coal. The FCA of Rs 13 paise, effective from November 4, was applied to last month’s bills. For December, there is a demand of Rs 5.56 paisa in terms of FCA, taking into account the average production from Tharcoal.
